Finding Joy in Uncertain Times

In today’s world, political instability and the uncertainty that comes with it can leave many of us feeling unsettled, anxious, and unsure about the future. News cycles are filled with constant headlines of tension, division, and unrest making it very difficult to avoid the pervasive sense that things are out of control. These feelings of dread get in the way of our ability to be in the present moment and savor each day. The good news is, while we may not be able to control the events unfolding around us, we can choose how we respond. In doing so, we avoid succumbing to the fear and frustration and instead, learn to build our resilience, strengthen our inner peace while finding more joy in each day. When we shift our attention to changing our mindset, focusing on relationships, and taking positive action within our communities we slowly remove the fear and frustration and replace it with a sense of calm control. Feeling a greater sense of control provides us with a foundation of stability and helps to reduce those feelings of helplessness and anxiety, especially in times like these. When we manage our responses more effectively, we’re able to navigate life's unpredictability with a greater sense of calm and assurance.

In order to find joy in these uncertain times, you must prioritize your mental and physical well-being. As the old adage goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup, so be intentional about creating the space to take care of yourself. Use your calendar to your advantage and schedule in time for yourself the same way you’d schedule a doctor’s appointment or a meeting. These “personal time blocks” need not be rigid, you should allow for flexibility, but it’s important to not delete yourself. You wouldn’t cancel on your doctor last minute, right? So why would you cancel on yourself? Use this self-care time to focus on the tools below and in no time you’ll be able to shift your mindset, see the good, and find more joy in each and every day.

  • Embrace the Present Moment - When life feels uncertain, it's easy to get caught up in what-ifs and future worries. But the secret to joy lies in the present moment. Focus on what’s happening right now whether it be the cup of coffee you're sipping, the cozy blanket you're wrapped in, or the smile from a friend or loved one. By savoring these simple moments, you ground yourself in the present and find peace in the midst of all the chaos.

  • Practice Gratitude - It might sound cliché but having a gratitude practice is a very powerful tool. It’s easy to fixate on what's not going right whether internally or externally, but when you shift your focus to the things you have and are thankful for, it allows you to change your perspective and find peace. Whether it's a supportive friend, a cozy room in your house, or a beautiful sunset, when you notice and express gratitude you create upward spirals of positivity and those spirals make a big difference in how you feel. As a practice, try writing down “one good thing” that you experienced or that happened in your day. This simple exercise helps to shift your focus toward the good things you might otherwise overlook.

  • Connect with Others - Even in the most uncertain of times, we are never truly alone and the support of others creates a sense of comfort, belonging and perspective. Whether it’s for a quick phone call or a cup of coffee, make time to connect with friends, family and neighbors. Having this sense of belonging helps to eliminate stress and anxiety, cope with difficult times and develop positive emotional well-being.

  • Find Meaning in Small Moments - Joy is often found in the small moments of life. The sights and sounds of nature when your walking outside, when your favorite song comes on the radio, a hot cup of tea or a really engrossing book. These tiny, everyday moments hold the power to lift your spirits and remind you that even in uncertainty, there are many moments of happiness and joy sprinkled throughout your day if you take the time to slow down and notice.

  • Nurture Your Well-Being - Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is crucial, even more necessary when you’re faced with uncertainty. Simple acts of self-care such as taking a walk, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in a hobby can help reduce your stress and increase feelings of well-being. When you prioritize yourself and your overall health you create a solid foundation which allows you to face challenges with greater resilience.

  • Practice Acceptance - Since we can’t always predict what might happen next, it’s necessary that we learn to accept the natural ebb and flow of life. This doesn’t mean resigning yourself to feeling unhappy or stuck, but rather it’s about acknowledging that things may not always go according to plan and that’s absolutely okay. By accepting the unknowns in life you create space to be more flexible, adaptive, and open to whatever comes your way.

  • Find Joy in Giving Back - Sometimes, the best way to find joy is by sharing joy with others. Volunteer your time, help a neighbor, or donate to a cause that’s close to your heart. Random acts of kindness, no matter how small, can bring immense joy not only to those who you help, but to yourself as well. Knowing that you’re making a positive impact in someone else's life can provide a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.

  • Take Positive Action in Your Community - Get involved, speak out and fight for what you value. There is a great quote by Margaret Mead that reads as follows, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” Small actions bring about big change so rather than sit back feeling frustrated and helpless, take small action to make things better for yourself and for your community.

In times of uncertainty or political unease, it can feel difficult to hold onto a sense of stability or hope. Yet, within this uncertainty lies an opportunity for personal growth. When the world around us seems volatile, we can find joy in our ability to adapt, connect, and make a difference in our own small way. This choice to remain resilient and hopeful, even in the face of uncertainty. will allow you to find ways to nurture joy and create light in dark times. Remember, even when things seem bleak, joy is never far out of reach. It’s right there waiting to be discovered in the little moments, the connections with others and in the simple pleasures of life.
